World News: Death penalty for men guilty of gang rape in India

Nine months after the horrific gang rape and murder of a young woman sparked worldwide outrage, a special court today has sentenced to death four men convicted of the crime, Yahoo! India News reported.

The crime was committed on a moving bus and the court asserted that the 23-year-old woman and her male friend were brutally assaulted, her abdomen was ripped apart with an iron rod and internal organs pulled out. Yahoo! India News reported the couple were thrown out of the moving bus and the accused tried to run the vehicle over them. She was left on the road naked, seriously injured, bleeding severely and shivering in the cold. Her friend later recovered but the woman's injuries were so severe she died in a Singapore hospital two weeks after the attack.

A judge convicted Mukesh Singh, 26, Vinay Sharma, 20, Pawan Gupta, 19, and Akshay Thakur, 28, on Sept. 10, holding that there was strong evidence they committed the gruesome crime. Prosecutors on Wednesday called for the death penalty in order to signify that such crimes would not be tolerated.
