Lauryn Hill has been in the news A LOT lately. Mainly due to her issues with Uncle Sam. Since the media got a hold of her tax issues, they've dragged it all the way out, but what's new? According to the mainstream media Lauryn recently signed a deal with Sony in order to avoid jail time. Lauryn elaborated on why a song just randomly appeared on iTunes today called, Neurotic Society, and what that song means to her by way of her tumblr:
Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!
While most people have long waited for the "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" Lauryn to emerge, this record is consistent with her most recent releases. Lauryn grew into a new space, or just refused to be held in the space she originally was in, and this can be hard for fans sometimes. Especially when an album is as classic as The Miseducation was.
You don't have to like the new Lauryn, but don't scold her for her artistry. As Jay Z said, you want her old stuff... buy her old album.
It's thought provoking and almost impossible to understand at first listen. What is clear is the message, which is also consistent dating back to her infamous MTV Unplugged album (Which I loved)..that message being that this world, this industry, and most people are living for the wrong things.
I don't LOVE this record, but I'm sure after a few listens I'll find the message vitally important. Lauryn is set to be sentenced May 6th for tax evasion.
