Authorities in Georgia have confirmed the death of Chris Kelly, one half of the pint-sized 90s rap duo, on Wednesday night, according to news outlets. A Fulton County police spokesperson said Kelly may have died from a drug overdose, based on statements received at the rapper's home as well as evidence.
The Fulton County medical examiner’s officer said Kelly, 34, was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. at the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center. Authorities aren’t sure of the cause of death and an autopsy has yet to be performed. TMZ reported that Kelly was found unresponsive at his home in Atlanta.
Kelly, known as Mac Daddy performed with Chris Smith, known as Daddy Mac, in the early and mid-90s. All the 80s babies and up remember the duo, famous for their baggy backwards jeans. Their 1992 “Totally Krossed Out” shot the group to stardom. They went on to make a couple more records before disbanding. They got back together for a reunion in February this year.
Donna Kelly Pratte, Kelly's mother, and the So So Def family released a joint statement. "It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1," they said in the statement. "To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris - the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him."
Kelly’s death is “wiggety, wiggety, wiggety wack!!” Enjoy this video of the group’s breakout debut single, “Jump!”
