Officials are investigating why a 300-pound airport sign fell off a wall and onto a family last week. The mother of a boy who was killed by the sign is still in the hospital, unconscious and unaware of what happened.
According to an Associated Press report, Heather Bresette and two of her other sons were seriously hurt when the panel fell Friday at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. She had surgeries for broken ankles and a crushed pelvis over the weekend, but was still in intensive care and unconscious.
The family of seven took a weeklong spring break vacation to Destin, Fla., and were about to fly home to Kansas when the flight information sign fell. Luke, the middle child, was killed. Tyler, 5, suffered a concussion. Sam, 8, had a broken leg and nose. Their father Ryan and their older son and daughter, were there but were not hurt.
According to AP, the location is part of a renovated concourse which opened March 13 as part of an ongoing $200 upgrade of Birmingham's airport. Construction contractor Brasfield & Gorrie Global Services Group is working with airport authorities to determine why the sign fell.
Let's keep this family in our prayers.
