Bizarre News: Ohio teacher may lose job over duct-taped students

Every now and then teachers make headlines for bizarre lessons and this teacher is no different. Melissa Cairns is a math teacher at Buchtel Community Learning Center and faces losing her job over a Facebook photo of her students with their mouths covered with duct tape.

The Akron Board of Education voted last week to pursue the firing of Cairns, according to a report by the Associated Press. She has until later this week to respond to the allegations, but has not returned media requests for comment. The school district says the photo posted on Cairns's personal Facebook page shows some of her students with duct tape across their mouths. The caption read: "Finally found a way to get them to be quiet!!!" The district said a colleague notified a supervisor of the photo.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported Cairns was put on paid leave October 19.

  2. She probably got tired of them talking while she was trying to do her job. However, she didn't make them do it and they didn't have to do it. I'm sure they put the tape on their own mouths bc they thought it was funny. Teachers have it hard. Just go to any classroom and see. SAD it's portrayed that way but I don't think she should get fired just a warning or suspension should suffice.
