Jordin Sparks working on third album as "Sparkle" premiers Friday

With her first film hitting theaters Friday alongside the late, great Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks is working on her third album and future acting projects.

The American Idol winner told Billboard that she has seven songs she feels strongly about that are ready for the album. Sparks said the album will have edgier songs and have more of a R&B/pop sound.  So far, she's worked with Harmony Samuels, Da Internz and Pop Wansel & Oak and she wants to hit the studio with Harvey Mason Jr., who produced parts of the "Sparkle" soundtrack.

Sparks insists her album is coming out soon. "But it's been so long since I put out an album I don't want to rush it. I really want it to be perfect and really represent the place I'm in and the sounds I want to do," she told Billboard. Sparks has started her next film, "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete," being filmed in New York executive produced by Alicia Keys and co-stars Jennifer Hudson and Anthony Mackie.

With all of this going on, Sparks is excited for her film debut. She said working with Whitney Houston was fun because Whitney wanted everyone to shine and had a great sense of humor. The fact that Houston won't be a part of the film opening is bittersweet for Sparks and Whitney's legion of fans. "This was supposed to be her moment, you know," Sparks said. "It had been 15 years since she had done another movie and it was supposed to be her coming out moment - and it is. She definitely delivers."
