J.R. Martinez, military vet and star of "All My Children," got off to a great start on Dancing With the Stars Monday night scoring 22 points. As you can see from the photo, Martinez was injured while on duty years ago, but his work on the show inspired contestants and judges. Learn more about him after the jump!
Martinez joined the military at 19 and while deployed in 2003 as an infantryman, he ran over a landmine while driving a truck. He suffered burns to 40 percent of his body, lost most of the hair on his head, and one of his ears. He endured 33 painful surgeries and skin grafts and tissue expansion to repair the damage to his body.
Despite the odds, he pushed through with life and wants to inspire others to do the same. He's tied with Chynna Phillips, who scored 30 points on the first night. Ron Artest was the first star to get booted off this week.
On the soap opera, Martinez played a former combat veteran and policeman since 2008. Sadly, ABC will end the show this week. But, he is thankful for the show's help in landing him on DWTS! Check out the video below of his first dance with partner Karina Smirnoff.
